Banting Secondary School has been affected very strongly by cancer. In the past year two of our beloved Broncos have passed away from this disease and Banting has been brought together as a stronger community because of this.
This year a group of grade ten students thought it would be a great idea to bring the Relay for Life to Banting for the first time. Relay for Life is a fundraiser for cancer research held at the school as a 12 hour event (throughout the night). Teams sign up and raise a minimum of $100 per student. Throughout the twelve hours at least one team member must be on the track at a time, while the others can see a hypnotist, go to a coffee house, get henna tattoos, face paint, watch a movie, or do crafts. There are many opportunities to meet new people and inspire others.
The most moving part of the night is when the luminary candles are lit. Each participant receives a luminary candle on which they write the name of the person, or people, they are walking for. At 11 o'clock at night everyone went to their team candles, placed around the track, and lit them. Everyone joined together in a huge group hug after this. Hugs were shared, tears were shed, and love was shown. What a beautiful event.
